Welcome Fall

Welcome to Fall, Friends.

Fall is a beautiful time in Indiana. There are many activities and festivals. Be sure to check our Things to Do for some ideas. Feel free to add to our lists. There is a comments section at the bottom of the page. If you find a fun family friendly fest, let us all know about it! We would hate to miss out on an opportunity to have a great time!

This Sunday we have the opportunity to see a supermoon eclipse. This full moon is closest to the earth on its orbit, which makes it appear larger. The show begins at 8:11 p.m. The Earth's shadow will cover the moon entirely from 10:11-10:47 p.m.

International Bible Study: Tuesdays, 9:00-10:30 in room 100.
We read the story of Jesus being presented in the temple when He was eight days old (Luke 2:21-40). Simeon was the priest and he had been promised that he would see the Lord's Christ before he died. The song he sings in response to seeing the baby Jesus is a famous song in the Christian church and is used at the end of Holy Communion or a service. We enjoyed chanting the song together in English. Simeon tells that he is ready to die now that he has seen Jesus. Luke doesn't tell us when Simeon does die. Anna, a widow who lived at the temple for most of her very long life, also saw Jesus and she told others who were looking for Him that He had come. This is a great story about the promises of God being fulfilled. Luke tells us in the end that Jesus grew and became strong and that He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on Him. (40) We wondered what Jesus was like as a child....

September 29: Let's read Luke 2:41-52
Come and hear read a story about what Jesus was like as a boy.

International Friends: Tuesdays, 10:30-12:00 in room 100
We took the meeting out to the parking lot to tailgate. We grilled brats and taiyaki. We ate the classic snacks: chips and salsa, popcorn, party mix and cookies. We drank beer (root beer) and soft drinks. We played corn hole and generally the party before the game! What game? Who needs a game!

September 29: Let's go pick apples at Stuckey Farm!
Meet at church to carpool to leave at 10:30 or meet at the farm. Be sure to dress for the weather!

Wednesday Casual Conversation, 4:30-6:00 in room 200
We drew "maps" of our lives to share with each other to learn about each other. Elizabeth brought in her favorite snacks: Mexican dip and chips and chocolate chip cookies to share and to show how she and her family spend time together.

September 30: Let's finish our introductions and taste Turkish baklava.
Join us as we enjoy each other's company and learn more about each other. We will enjoy Turkish baklava!

English Classes: Thursdays, 9:30-12:00 in the upstairs classrooms
Classes are finally underway! We are beginning our fourth week of classes and settling down in with our new class and teachers. It takes a few classes for teachers to learn about their students and for students to get to know their teacher. From the sounds of your classes, this has happened! I hear a lot of happy talking in English! This is exactly what we are looking for!

I was so happy to dance with most of the classes! Thank you for the chance for me to show off my skills and for joining me. Thank you for teaching me some new steps!

See you next week!
Carolyn

feel free: go ahead and do something; "feel free to help yourself to some cookies" means have a cookie!
find a fun family friendly fest: look at all those words beginning with "f" in a row! How cool! This is called an alliteration and draw attention to the message.
hate to miss out on; you really don't want to miss something; this is a classic Midwest slang full of additional
have a great time: enjoy yourself
its: possessive of it, belonging to it. This is a full word like his or hers.
Earth's: possessive of the earth; belonging to the earth. 's added to any noun shows belonging. Notice that Earth is capitalized, moon is not.
eight: when you write a number under 10 you spell it. Use the number for 10 and above.
Lord's Christ: there is interesting capitalization. In the Bible (capitalized), when God is named in any way the words are capitalized. In this case, this is another name for Jesus. Lord's (belonging to God) Christ (the promised Savior or Messiah). Pronouns referring to God may or may not be capitalized according to custom. I like to go old-school and capitalize references to God.
chanting: say something in a singsong tone.
underway: started and moving along
what we are looking for: we are meeting our goal!
