Wrapping up the summer

Hello, Friends.

We had another great Meet Up this time at West Park. We had spectacular weather which was so delightful since we have been soggy for the last few Meet Ups.

Safe Driving
This has been the summer of construction all around town. We have had a proliferation of roundabouts. Here is a refresher for the
Proper Way to Drive through a Roundabout
•    Slow down and stay in your lane
•    Yield to vehicles already in the roundabout
•    Obey one-way signs at all times
•    When traffic is clear, merge to the right and continue to stay in your lane
•    Continue through the roundabout until you reach your exit point
•    Avoid stopping in a roundabout
•    Yield to pedestrians and bicycles when there is a crosswalk
•    When exiting, signal and exit to the right
•    Left turns are completed by circling around the center island and then making a right turn to exit
•    Indiana State Police also say state law requires motorists to yield the right-of-way to semi-trucks while driving inside a roundabout.
Finally, school has started or is starting. Here are some Rules of the Road to help keep our children safe:

•    You must always stop for a bus that is loading or unloading children. The bus lights will be flashing red and the stop sign arm will be out. This is true even if there are multiple lanes of traffic.
•    If the roadway is divided (has trees, grass, or cement separating the directions of traffic) and your are on the opposite side of the road from the bus, you do not need to stop.
•    Watch and obey the reduced speed limits in school zones.

August 21: Total Eclipse of the Sun
August 21 is a total eclipse. Be prepared! Carmel Public Library is hosting a family friendly Eclipse Extravaganza August 12, 12:00-4:00. Enjoy food, fun, music, face painting, solar eclipse games and crafts. Daytime telescope viewing of the sun with telescopes from the Link Observatory Space Institute as well as free eclipse viewing glasses. and so much more. We won't experience totality here in Indianapolis, but check this site if you want to make a short drive to Illinois or Kentucky, but no worries! Even if you stay here you will get to experience an eclipse that is only a couple degrees off of complete! Regardless, be sure to follow safety guidelines and not look directly at the sun! Only the special glasses should be used otherwise you can use a pinhole device to watch the shadow of the sun. Here are the easy directions . This is my preferred method mostly because I won't get a stiff neck!

Wrapping up the summer:

We have one more Meet Up:
Join us August 24 at 11:00 at Central Park West (1195 Central Park Dr. W., Carmel-enter off of College Avenue)
Read more about this great park at Indy With Kids

proliferation: to grow by increasing numbers
experience totality: this is a new one for me (even though I have had the opportunity to experience eclipses in the past); we called it a full eclipse.
couple of degrees off: this is technical and slang all in one phrase! A couple of ... off means slightly out of alignment. Degrees, in this case, is referring to
pinhole: a tiny hole; the size of a pinpoint
device: equipment
stiff neck: sore neck from holding your head in one position too long.
