The Latest News

Hello Friends,

Daylight Savings: This weekend we "spring forward". Move your manual clocks forward one hour. If you have been enjoying the extra light in the morning, be prepared for some dark days once again for a little while. On the other hand, you can enjoy longer light time in the evening.

Spring Events: As you look forward to spring, you may notice that sign ups for summer camps are opening. There are so many great opportunities for kids of all ages.

The Say's Firefly is now the official insect of Indiana! Fifth grade students in the elementary schools in Lafayette Indiana wrote and lobbied for what became Senate Bill 236. Click on the link to read this bill! Read the news: Gov. Holcomb to Sign Bill.

March weather is famous. There is a famous is the saying:
What do you think? Were the first few weeks of weather fierce or mild? Michigan through the East coast is experiencing a nor'easter. Strong winds, flooding and rain as well as snow are impacting 16 states this weekend. A nor'easter is a great storm like a hurricane that affects the northeastern part of the United States and is the result of the cold arctic air clashing with the warm air from the Atlantic Ocean. There are usually three nor'easters a year. Hurricanes and nor'easters are very similar except that hurricanes have a 30 mile radius of strong winds around their center, where as a nor'easter may have a 100-mile radius! Not only that, our west coast is also seeing rain and winds and some areas have been evacuated to protect  the residents from mud slides. We got some thunderstorms and gusty winds.

We will have a member of the Carmel Police Department meet with us March 15. Some people may feel shy about asking questions from a police officer in front of the group. Please write any questions you may have for the officer and pass them to your teacher.

International Bible Study: Tuesdays, 9:30-10:30, room 100.
What attributes does a good father have? The people in our Bible Study suggest that he would surely be loving, helpful, protective, and a good listener.

In Matthew 6:9-13 Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray, with a prayer that has come to be known as The Lord’s Prayer. He begins with the words, “Our Father in heaven,” suggesting we should see God as our wonderful, loving, and compassionate Father, who is always willing to listen to our prayers.

Hallowed be your name.” When we say these words we pray that we would keep God’s name holy. This happens when we give God the respect and the glory He deserves as the King of Kings.

"Your kingdom come." Jesus came to earth once as a baby, who grew up to take away the sins of the world by His suffering and death, and who rose again from the dead. He will come back again to establish His eternal kingdom. By God's grace, through faith in Jesus, we are already citizens of His kingdom, but we look forward to His return, when we will live forever with Him in heaven.

"Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." These words remind us that God is in charge. We are praying that what happens on earth be aligned with what God wants, not with what the Devil wants.

There is so much packed into the Lord's Prayer! We talked for an hour, and we have only made it halfway through! ~Jan Heimann

March 6: Please join us next week as we focus on the last half of this most famous prayer.

International Friends: Tuesdays, 10:30-12:00, room 100.
We made chicken and dumplings: a hearty and delicious supper dish. This is a typical evening meal in farm country in the Midwest and South. There are two styles: one has biscuit dough dropped onto the broth and covered to steam into fluffy soft dumplings; the other style has thick noodles dropped into the broth to soak up the flavors. It is fun to ask people which their family made at home. This isn't a dish you will typically find in a restaurant unless you go to a home style diner.

March 6: Join us as we make polvoron (Filipino-style). This innovative and tasty treat is made on the stovetop but has the flavor and texture of shortbread!

Conversation: Wednesdays, 4:30-6:00, room 209.
We read a number of articles in the Easy English News dealing with March events as well as about Federal taxes. We critiqued our pronunciation for both listening and speaking. We enjoyed discussions about legal matters that surround address changes (like you have a certain window of time to change your address on your driver's license when you move).

March 7: We will have interesting talks about whatever moves us. Impromptu discourse is an important skill.

English Classes: Thursdays, 9:30-12:00, upstairs classrooms.
A number of our teachers were absent from our classes this week due to vacations and illness. Thanks to the many hands that help with our classes, I don't think we skipped a beat!

Our American Accent Class combined with our Conversation class. There were great opportunities for people to meet new friends and expand their vocabulary.

Level 3 talked about Shakespeare and memorizing.

Level 2 read Dr. Seuss's classic Fox in Socks. Listen and read along! There are so many words combined in this poem that are easily confused in pronunciation and listening.

March 8: We always have room for more! Join us.
