Good things never end!

Hello Friends!

I hope you are enjoying our first week of break...not really.

I want to share with you our (officially) last International Bible Study. We talked about how Jesus promises that He will return some day. Since no one knows the day or time He will return, how will we know when He comes back? How can we be sure that it is really Jesus? Men have said that they are the Messiah, but then they die or are put in jail for crimes. So how do you know? We looked at Matthew 24 where Jesus talks about what it will be like before He returns. When He does return, it will be obvious! It will be "as the lightening that comes form the east and is visible even in the west. (verse 27)...[all nations of the earth] will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory (verse 30)."  Does all of this make sense? Can we imagine it? Probably not, but when it happens we will recognize what is happening. Conversely, if the person saying he is Jesus or the Son of God and he isn't returning on the clouds and with angels, then nevermind! It is an impostor.

Our International Friends trip to the Indianapolis Art Museum Tuesday for Museum Day was great fun! If you have a chance to go, please be sure to visit the Indiana art special exhibit. As a Hoosier, you need to know all about the famous artists in your home state! I want to go back and play putt putt golf. They have special art and historic pieces to play through. The IMA is free from 4:00-9:00 pm the first Thursday of each month.

Saturday, May 21 is the third Saturday! Join us for Chinese Brush Painting (or any other painting you like to do). Bring you supplies and let's paint!

comes back: return
really: true, actual
looked at: read/scanned quickly; did not read all of the chapter thoroughly
obvious: clear, not hidden we loved the Chinese writing 明显 which is sun and moon and white light!
[all nations of the earth]: when you see words in brackets  (in English) it means that the words in the brackets are substitute words to better explain an idea in a sentence and aren't the direct word. In this case, the sentence actually has the word "they" but the previous sentence is talking about
all the nations of the earth: all people everywhere, no one is left out
then nevermind: don't pay attention; don't listen
impostor: someone who claims to be a king or prince but is a nobody
have a chance to: opportunity
special exhibit: museum show that is there for a short time
putt putt golf: a game where you "putt" the golf ball through fun obstacle courses.
play through: when you play a golf game and progress from one "hole" to another, you are playing through the course

....And one more thing...or two...

Here are a few things we talked about and I promised to give you more information and links:

Creeds

At the International Bible study we talked about creeds. A creed is a basic statement of belief of a group.

Two creeds regularly used in Christian churches are
The Apostles Creed
The Nicene Creed

We talked about how the Maasai people of Africa wrote their creed.
The Maasai Creed

Listen to a really good interview about creeds and their value to people with Jarlolav Pelikan

Apps for Learning Language Vocabulary

There are a couple great sites that are also apps for your phone that are both fun and great for language learning. You can study anywhere like playing a game. They also help you set goals and keep you studying.

International Bible Study
We read Luke 10:25-11:28. We broke into pairs to read and report. Wow! Did we cover a lot of ground in a short time!
  • Luke 10:25-37: the Parable of the Good Samaritan. This is a story Jesus told when an expert in the Jewish laws tested Jesus. He asked, "What must I do to inherent eternal life?" Jesus turns the question back on him and the expert recites: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus tells him that that was correct: Do this and you will live. Luke tells us that he follows with a question to justify himself: And who is my neighbor. Jesus then tells the famous story where a man who is robbed is passed by a Jewish priest a Jewish law expert, but is rescued and taken care of by the foreigner who was had no ties to the man. Jesus asks who is the neighbor, the man answers: the foreigner.
  • Luke 10:38-42: Jesus is visiting His dear friends Mary and Martha. Martha works hard preparing their home for the guests. Mary sits by Jesus and listens to Him. Martha complains to Jesus. Jesus tells her, "You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed." We discovered that many times we get caught up in work and become angry when we don't have help with our choices. We talked about one of the ways we show our love and is to serve others. Mary chose to spend time with her friend. Martha chose to serve by working to make her guests welcome, but then she angry that she didn't have help. Jesus invites us to sit down with Him. You can be sure that He will lend a hand with the work that needs to be done.
  • Luke 11:1-12: Jesus teaches us to pray. Jesus is praying and friends ask Him how to talk to God. Jesus gives them the words and then he goes on to explain that when we ask God, He always will give us not just what we ask for but He will give is even more than what we could ever dream of wanting or needing because He is our Father and He loves us.
  • Luke 11:14-28: Jesus drives a demon out of a man. Some people want a sign from heaven to prove that Jesus wasn't doing the work of the devil. Jesus points out that if He is doing the work of the Devil, then the other people who were doing the same work must also be doing the work of the devil. Jesus then points out that if He is driving out demons "by the finger of God" then the kingdom of God has come to you."20 How amazing! We don't have to find the kingdom of God, it comes to us. Jesus then tells the people that if they aren't for Him, they are against Him. They are destructive. As Jesus continues to teach, a woman calls out a blessing on Jesus and on His mother. Jesus replies, "Blessed rather are those who hear the world of God and obey it." God sees our love for each other and He recognizes it.

Only one more to go!

Hello, Friends.

We only have only one more week to go! Can you believe it? I can't. This has been one of the fastest years of International Friends in the history of our program and I have enjoyed every minute with you. Please friend me on Facebook so I can keep up with you over the summer.

International Bible Study: Tuesdays, 9:00-10:30, room 100

I was so sorry to miss these amazing stories! Thank you Jan for this summary:

Tuesday we read Luke 9:57-62 and talked about the cost of following Jesus. The first man in the story volunteers to follow Jesus wherever he goes, but Jesus warns him that he will have to give up his creature comforts if he chooses to follow Jesus. No more soft bed in a house of his own! The second man tries to put off a commitment to follow Jesus: He asks Jesus to let him bury his father first (we wondered if that could have been an event that was still years away). Jesus' replied, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God," If this sounds rather harsh to us, but His clear message is that telling others about God's love for them has to take top priority. The third man in this passage can't leave without saying goodbye to his family. Jesus warns him that once you begin to plow, you had better fix your eyes on the field in front of you.  Constantly looking behind you as you plow will cause the furrows to be very crooked, as every farmer knows. Following Jesus has a cost, and it is not always an easy road. We talked about the huge commitment our pastors and other church workers make to enter a life of service to God and His Church. We also discussed how each person who wants to follow Jesus must make that a number one priority in his or her life.
We also read Luke 10:1-24 and discussed how Jesus sent 72 disciples out, two by two, without money or spare clothing and shoes. They relied upon the goodness and generosity of others for their daily needs, and if the people were not welcoming, they moved on to the next town to heal the sick and cast out demons and to proclaim that the kingdom of God was near. We all agreed that the people who lived in Israel during the time Jesus was on earth were so blessed to have had the opportunity to hear Him speak and to see Him do miracles. We wish we could have been there to witness it too!

Tuesday, May 10, 2016: Let's read Luke 10:25-37
Join us as we will read parables. This is one of the most famous. I can't wait to read with you!

International Friends: Tuesdays, 10:30-12:00, room 100

Thank you for making me a fabulous bento for my lunch at the polls. We had a good voter turn out. This was an important time in the history of the United States and the state of Indiana. Thank you for your support for me to go and work for our country and state this day. I have the best Friends!

Tuesday, May 10: Let's have a BBQ

I'll bring my grill and brats, you bring a dish to share and a chair. We will celebrate the end of our year with a picnic in the parking lot. If it rains, we will move the party indoors.

Conversation: Wednesdays, 4:30-6:00

Thank you for the takoyaki party. We totally enjoyed this Osakan traditional treat: we had traditional with octopus, then we enjoyed sausage and mozzarella, and then we had dessert takoyaki! Yum! Elizabeth, did you order your pan from Amazon? We talked about getting together over the summer at Conner Prairie for Symphony on the Prairie.

Wednesday, May 11
OH NO! I don't know what we are doing next week in class! How funny that I am texting and calling all of you. Did I check out after the takoyaki feast?

International Friends: Thursdays, 9:30-12:00

What a great Cinco de Mayo celebration! Thank you to all of our Spanish speaking cooks for teaching us how to cook delicious Latin dishes. Thank you Conversation class for your work and for hosting this really fun event. We enjoyed every bit and every bite!
